What is the macula?
The human eye is similar to a camera. The retina of the eye is like the film of a camera, it is the part of the eye that actually "takes the picture." The macula is the central part of the retina where all the fine vision or reading vision takes place. The macula is used when the eye looks directly at something.

What is macular degeneration?
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Americans 65 years of age or older. The central fine vision required for "straight ahead" viewing such as reading and driving is damaged in this condition.

What is the difference between Dry Macular Degeneration vs. Wet Macular Degeneration?
Dry Macular Degeneration is the less severe type of Macular Degeneration. In Dry Macular Degeneration the central retina has become distorted, pigmented, or most commonly thinned. The "wet" form of macular degeneration is a worse disease. Patients with wet macular degeneration can develop abnormal blood vessels under their retina which can leak and bleed into the macula.

Is there a cure for macular degeneration?
No, but there now is a way to lessen the risk of loss of vision from this disease. Read on.

What is AREDS?
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a major ten year study sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the Federal government's National Institutes of Health, and was conducted at 11 major medical center research facilities around the country. The study, completed in October 2001, sought to determine whether taking vitamin and/or mineral supplements could help prevent, treat or cure certain eye conditions.

What did AREDS find?
AREDS found that people at high risk of developing advanced stages of AMD, a leading cause of vision loss, lowered their risk by about 25 percent when treated with a high-dose combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc.

Who should take these vitamins?
The study found that patients with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye but not the other were more likely to benefit. Your eye care doctor will tell you if you should be taking Aredium.

What are the daily doses of the vitamins and minerals recommended?
500 milligrams of vitamin C; 400 international units of vitamin E; 15 milligrams of beta-carotene; 80 milligrams of zinc as zinc oxide; and two milligrams of copper as cupric oxide (Copper was added to the AREDS formulations containing zinc to prevent copper deficiency, which may be associated with high levels of zinc supplementation).  Aredium is specially formulated with a slightly lower dose of vitamin E so that when taken with your multivitamin you won't be taking more than 400 I.U. which is recommended in other studies.

Does Aredium contain the vitamins and minerals in the proper doses recommended by AREDS?
Yes. In addition Aredium AREDS Formula and Aredium Smoker's Formula have the added potential benefit of the recommended doses by the AREDS study.

Can I also take my daily multivitamin with Aredium?
The AREDS study proved that it is safe to take the AREDS recommended vitamins (Aredium) and a multivitamin. However, we recommend only taking a companion supplement which reduces the risk of overdosing by taking unneeded antioxidants and zinc in your current multivitamin which are already present in Aredium AREDS Formulas.

What is Lutein?
Lutein is a potent antioxidant carotenoid, found in abundance in fruits and green leafy vegetables. Lutein is also one of the dominant pigments found in the macular region of the healthy retina. Because of this, many eye doctors recommend Lutein to their patients with macular degeneration.

Why wasn't Lutein included in the AREDS?
Lutein was not available when AREDS was started but it probably would have been included if the study were started now.

What are the potential side effects of the AREDS vitamins and minerals?
The AREDS participants reported few side effects from the treatments. About 7.5 percent of participants assigned to the zinc treatments -- compared with 5.0 percent who did not have zinc in their assigned treatment -- had urinary tract problems. Yellowing of the skin, a well-known side effect of large doses of beta-carotene, was reported slightly more often by participants taking antioxidants.

Do the AREDS vitamins also lower the risk of developing cataracts?
Despite the evidence that these nutrients did not lower the risk of cataract development over the seven-year period in the AREDS study, another study did find a benefit.

What are the advantages of Aredium over competing products?
Aredium is absolutely the most complete and powerful supplement money can buy. Research has proven that the ingredients in Aredium not only can protect against macular degeneration, but help prevent cataracts and even improve visual function overall. This exclusive nutritional formula is based on the latest national and international studies for the treatment of macular degeneration, and contains all the nutrients in the precise concentrations most beneficial to your eyes.

Does Areduim contain any preservatives or artificial ingredients?
Aredium contains no artificial colors or flavors, chemicals, starches or sugars, yeast or anything else unnatural. No other “name brand” vitamin for macular degeneration can make that claim.
